That availability matters more than it looks. Most of what turns up in a search for welding positioners is written for North American buyers about machines nobody imports here, and the ones genuinely available often sit eight to twelve weeks out on a container.

What makes a welding positioner "best" for an NZ buyer?

Spec sheets are the easy part. Three things separate a good purchase from a bad one. A good positioner improves accuracy and consistency while cutting the wasted time that repositioning adds to every job.

Can you get it, and when? A machine ordered in March and delivered in June has cost you a quarter of the productivity you bought it for. In this class, the NZ market is thin, and local stock is worth a premium over a marginally better unit in terms of lead time.

What does it cost to set up, not boxed? Almost every positioner here is quoted bare or near-bare. Chucks, jaws and torch arms are extra. Compare what you'll need to weld with, not what arrives in the carton.

Can anyone here support it? Chucks wear out, pedals get stood on, and drive motors eventually need attention. Buying from someone who stocks wear parts is the difference between a day of downtime and a month.

Only one of those is a specification. That's deliberate.

Who needs a welding positioner in NZ?

A positioner pays for itself through repetition, not variety. It lets one operator handle a job that would otherwise need constant manual repositioning.

Small fabrication shops are doing repeat round work. A Palmerston North shop welding flanges onto short spools does the same joint dozens of times a month. If hand-turning each part costs you three minutes in stops and re-clamps, a batch of twenty has burned an hour on repositioning alone. Run that against your shop rate before you buy. It's a calculation, not a sales pitch.

Automotive restorers and performance shops. Header collectors, intercooler pipework, steering knuckles, diff housing halves. Odd shapes that never sit flat and never sit the same way twice.

Machinery and implement repairers. Cylinder end caps, hubs, and PTO components. A Marlborough or Timaru repair shop turning cylinder ends through winter gets the ergonomic benefit as much as the quality benefit, and a better working environment throughout the day.

Serious hobbyists and one-person shops. Often dismissed, and shouldn't be. A positioner fixes a common issue in self-taught welds: the start-stop defect, where each hand-turned segment meets the last.

Where it doesn't pay: genuinely varied one-off work, large flat frames, and anything easier to walk around than to mount.

Promax HD10 welding positioner: full review

The Promax HD10 welding positioner is a benchtop tilting rotary unit rated 10 kg vertical and 5 kg horizontal. The full specification table is in our how-to-choose guide, so here's how it behaves instead.

What arrives. The machine, a foot control and a K01-63 chuck. More generous than it sounds, because the pedal is what makes the thing usable one-handed and plenty of competitors charge for it. Not included: extension jaws and a torch mounting arm.

First setup. It runs off a normal single-phase workshop socket, worth confirming if you've been quoted three-phase machines. The unit weighs 10 kg, light enough to shift between benches alone and light enough that you must bolt or clamp it down before loading near capacity. A machine weighing the same as its maximum workpiece will move if you don't, and it'll move at the worst moment.

Rotation. The 2-16 r/min variable-speed range determines whether this suits you, and the bottom end matters far more than the top. Two r/min is slow enough for TIG thin-wall stainless without chasing the puddle. Consistent rotation at that speed keeps the arc in the downhand position and distributes heat evenly, which is what thin stainless and aluminium need. The upper end covers MIG fillets on a repeat batch. If you need rotation measured in minutes per revolution, this won't meet that requirement.

Tilt, and the question everybody asks. It's manual. You set the table to any angle from 0 to 90 degrees, and it self-locks there. Not motorised, not programmable. At this price, that's the right call, because you set the angle for the job and leave it.

On pipe and with TIG. The centre through-hole and the anti-electromagnetic shielding on the drive are the two features that justify the HD10 over a cheaper unit, and the controlled rotation eliminates manual repositioning on repeat pipework. Both are explained in our how-to-choose guide, and both address real failure modes rather than marketing points.

Build. A competent light-duty machine at a light-duty price. Chuck is solid, pedal is responsive, tilt holds. Nothing is over-engineered, and nothing needs to be.

What the Promax HD10 is best suited for

  • Small pipe and tube fittings. Flanges, nozzles, sockets, and short spools. Stainless fittings typically weigh between 2 and 6 kg. This is light pipe fabrication, where controlled rotation improves access, weld quality and consistency across a batch.
  • Bracket and tab batches. Mower brackets, trailer light plates, and similar sit in the 2 to 4 kg range.
  • Automotive components. Header collectors, intercooler pipework, suspension and restoration parts with curved faces.
  • Visible-finish TIG on stainless and aluminium. Handrail sections, food-grade fittings, and work where the weld doesn't get painted over.
  • Small round assemblies. Hubs, cylinder end caps, and small drums.

The sweet spot is 1-8 kg. Inside that band, you stop thinking about the load rating, which is the point. Between 8 and 10 kg vertically it'll do the work, but check your centre of gravity and secure the machine.

What the Promax HD10 is not suited for

This is the section that saves you money.

  • Structural steel. Beams, columns, large frames, thick plate. You want a floor-standing positioner rated in hundreds of kilograms, and the heaviest industrial units run to several tonnes.
  • Dairy and irrigation pipework, tanks and vessels. Turning rolls territory, not positioner territory. Rotators built for that work have adjustable rollers to suit different pipe diameters and lengths.
  • Anything routinely over 50 kg. Industrial positioners, usually special order and often three-phase, with geared drives built for the load.
  • Fixtured assemblies creeping past 10 kg. The jig, clamps, and chuck all count before your part does.
  • Very slow TIG below 2 r/min, or motorised tilt.

Welding turntable vs rotary welding positioner: which is the HD10?

The HD10 is a tilting rotary positioner. It is not a turntable, and it is not a rotator.

Here's the test. Look at your most common job and ask whether the joint stays in one plane the whole way round. A ring weld on a flat flange does. A branch fitting, an angled boss, or a bracket on a curved face does not.

If everything you weld stays in one plane, a plain turntable would do, and you could spend less. If any of your regular work changes orientation around the part, the 0- to 90-degree tilt is the whole reason to buy this machine. Where a weldment needs more axes than tilt and rotation, you're into multi-axis positioners, which is a different class of machine again.
